Rifqa Bary, a petite 17 year old cheerleader, fled from Ohio to Florida to escape her abusive Muslim family. She fled out of fear that she would be killed because she has become a Christian and she has good reasons.

Her father screamed at her that if she had Jesus in her heart, she was dead to him and he would kill her. Prior to that Rifqa had been repeatedly beaten by her family even to the point of losing vision in one eye.

Under Shariah law, the theo-political-legal program of Islam, “apostasy” is considered a capital offense. This is justified by a passage in Chapter 18 of the Quran that allows Muslims to murder wayward children, a practice now considered an “honor killing.”

Muslim “honor killings” are on the rise with at least three such instances occurring in the U.S. over last few months, in Texas, Atlanta, and New York. This isn’t just something that happens in the Middle East. In Britain there are at least 110 cases under investigation. In Canada four women were found murdered a few weeks ago, and investigation would further discover that they were murdered by their Muslim family members in order to redeem the family’s honor.

Some have recently been executed for such “offenses” as wearing make-up, dating or even talking on the phone to non-Muslim boys, not wearing the hijab, or other head coverings, or for filing for divorce. Often times it is the woman who suffer under this harsh treatment. Still many others are killed after leaving Islam for another faith.

Without the intervention of Florida’s governor, Charlie Crist, it is expected that the state judge will make Rifqa return to Ohio— under the threat of death. While Crist is under great pressure he intends to run for the United States Senate, he should know that allowing Rifqa to be forced back into this situation would hurt his political reputation tremendously, especially if something happens to her.
